PERSONALITY AND BACKGROUND She accidentally shot and killed her mother when she was a child. She lived her uncaring and abusive father T.ray until she ran away after breaking her maid, Rosaleen, out of jail in the summer of 1964.




ROLE IN STORY She plays the role of a surrogate mother to Lily and a Female Role model.
PERSONALITY AND BACKGROUND Eldest of the three Boatwright sisters. She is a respected businesswomen in the the town of Tiburon, South Carolina and sells the honey she gets from beekeeping.August is a kind person with a good heart and she is the one who offers to let Lily stay at the Boatwright house.



ROLE IN STORY Zach is lily's love interest. He was also a plot tool to make Lily realize and question her own racist thoughts. For example, when Lily comments that her school would have been envious because even they people at her old school had told her African Americans couldn't be as cute as white men, she'd found one who was extremely handsome. After saying this, she realizes how convoluted it was that she had even believed that in the first place.
PERSONALITY AND BACKGROUND Zach wants to become a lawyer and is a junior in highschool. He's a kind and hard working young man who helps out the Boatwright sisters with the bee farm. He's also clever.




ROLE IN STORYLily's father and antagonist.
PERSONALITY AND BACKGROUND Grief has turned him into a bitter man, though, he was bitter before his wife's death too. He's just a jerk. His wife was accidentally killed by his own daughter.




ROLE IN STORYShe is the catalyst that sets Lily off on her coming of age journey. When Rosaleen went to jail, lily broke her out and together they ran away, making their way to the town of Tiburon, South Carolina. Rosaleen was Lily's black maid, and was originally her only friend.
PERSONALITY AND BACKGROUND She is very pragmatic but also very kind, she was Lily's only friend at the beginning of the story and also a maid to the Owens family
